I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase that ‘all disease begins in the gut’ and about the importance of probiotics over the last few years. This is proving to be true as good gut health is directly related to overall health for both us and our pets.
Sometimes beneficial microbes (bacteria) are damaged or destroyed, causing upset stomach and a general decline in health. By taking pre or probiotics you can aid in the digestion of food, fight off potential pathogens, make nutrients and vitimins, and boost the immune system.
Probiotics help boost the ‘good bacteria that can promote balance and help the digestive track. This is something I’ve incorporated into my routine of vitamins the last few years, and now making sure my doogos get theirs too.
Giving friendly bacteria to your dog can specifically help:
- Reduce food and environmental allergic reactions
- Support the immune system
- Digestion
- Reduce gastrointestinal issues
- Promote nutrient production
- Better skin health, coat and breath
- Eliminate toxins from the body
- Enhance nutrient absorption
- Improve mood and stress related behavior
- Decrease the side effects of antibiotics
- Help improve the quality of life for our senior dogs who are more susceptible to a compromised immune system.
- Support dental health
Probiotics come in several forms and even some food will include them. Supplements are produced as chews, powders, capsules, and liquids. Other sources can be found in human foods such as yogurt which can be incorporated into your dogs kibble or a smoothie (link to recipes).
One of my favorite ways to make sure my dogs are getting their good bacteria is a yogurt lick-mat. These are not only beneficial- but fun and a great enrichment activity! Simply spread the yogurt on the mat or bowl and top with fruit and treats. Freeze for a longer lasting treat!
