Slow Down Charlie Brown. What’s The Point of a Slow-Feeder?

Does your dog ‘woof’ down food like they haven’t eaten since 1992? Food is pretty exciting I agree, but we’re gonna need a time out over here in this corner.  So why do we need to slow them down and under what circumstances should we use a slow-feeder?   Keep reading to find out why a puzzle bowl is a key investment in your dog’s health.

You’ve probably seen plenty of odd-shaped bowls, lick mats, and toys all over the internet serving food to dogs.  These are commonly used as dog bowls in order to feed fast eaters.

A few reasons why dogs eat too fast could be due to hunger, competition or health issues, and it’s important to slow. them. down.

When I started researching more about my new~est  dog  (a Standard Poodle), I learned that her specific breed could be susceptible to bloat. This is more common in narrow chested large dogs.

Bloat can happen when dogs gulp down food or water too quickly causing air to get trapped in their stomach which can cause the stomach to twist.  GDV or gastric dilated volvulus then cuts off blood supply to the body which can be fatal.  Ya’ll. I was terrified hearing of this worst-case scenario.  Besides air in the stomach (and even if your dog is not prone to bloat) eating too fast can also cause choking or throwing food back up.

Eating slow keeps our dogs busy for a bit, (giving us parents a moment to ourselves) and encourages them to actually chew their food instead of inhaling it hence keeping them safe. So, I got on board.

Slow feeders come with very simple or more intricate designs, also in different shapes and materials.  And did I mention fun colors.  Take a look!!
