Lick mats have been *all the rage* in the dog world and are a creative way to keep your dog busy and entertained.  This is a great way to give your dogs a little extra enrichment in their lives.  In this article we will go over benefits of a lick mat and list 10 of the best toppings to use followed by some recipes.

What are Lick Mats?

If you aren’t familiar with a lick mat, it’s a texturized rubber or silicon surface with grooves to hold all kinds of yummy edible substances. Your dog has to work for their treats by licking in and around the grooves.  This is a perfect way to keep your active dog mentally stimulated and occupied while you do human things or have to leave for work.  Even if it’s for just 15-20 minutes, dogs are engaged and getting their tummies full working for their snacks.  These are great for puppies and higher energy food driven dogs, however most dog’s will go after a lick mat just out of curiosity.

Benefits of a Lick Mat

  • Stress relief– any dog that is anxious can benefit from the soothing of the lick mat.
  • Slowing a fast eater– this can also double as a slow feeder for a dog that is food driven and needs to pace their eating
  • Occupying a bored dog– by giving them something to focus on, they will be less likely to get into trouble
  • Distraction– from lawn maintenance to people walking down the road or any other attention situation, a lick mat will be a good way to detour them from barking
  • Encouraging rest– after this activity you can offer “quiet time”
  • Mental Stimulation- Some dogs just need a brain game especially if they are a highly intelligent breed. A challenge is always something they will be up to.
  • We the pet parents get a well deserved BREAK!- sometimes we need to relax or tend to responsibilities, so this is a great way to buy some time.
